What’s New at Hillhead 2018?

First published in the May 2018 issue of Quarry Management

Next month [June] Tarmac’s Hillhead Quarry, near Buxton, Derbyshire, will once again host the world’s biggest working quarry exhibition. From 26-28 June Hillhead will welcome more than 500 UK and overseas suppliers of plant, equipment, materials and services, many of them using the show as a platform for the launch of their latest products. The following pages provide a brief glimpse of just some of the new plant, equipment, systems and services that visitors will be able to see on display for the first time.

Altrad Belle will be showcasing British manufacturing at its best as they seek to reinforce their position as number one for light construction equipment. The company says visitors to the Altrad Belle demonstration area will be able to ‘feel the difference’ from a large line-up of powerful but low hand/arm vibration compaction equipment, the star product being the newly launched RPX range of reversible plate compactors with fully integrated wheels for ease of manoeuvrability. Altrad Belle will also showcase a new range of generators and pressure washers to complement products from their compacting, concreting, cutting, breaking, moving and mixing equipment ranges.

With 40 years’ expertise in the manufacture dedicated hydraulic tools and equipment for the demolition, recycling, rehandling and earthmoving sectors, Arden Equipment aim to provide new product innovations whilst making safety and the environment two of their main priorities. The French manufacturer has now joined the shortlist of tilt-rotor manufacturers and its new Arden TiltRotor will be shown exclusively at Hillhead 2018. Moreover, Arden Equipment have extended their Arden Jet technology to the company’s sorting grabs and high-lift buckets, and say the multi-award-winning water-spraying system is the first to be factory fitted on a demolition tool to reduce on-site dust.

Bell Equipment will be showcasing the largest range of articulated dumptrucks on the market at this year’s Hillhead show. The company’s evolved E-series line-up now comprises machines ranging from the compact B20E to the heavyweight B60E. According to Bell, the latest addition to the range, the B20E, is already proving popular due to its ability to manoeuvre easily within small spaces and its low ground pressure that allows it to operate in excessively muddy or sandy conditions. At the other end of the spectrum, the B60E has proven itself as a solution capable of moving large volumes of materials in all weather conditions, in a market sector that was previously only contested by rigid trucks. Visitors to the Bell stand will also be able to discover more about the new B30E 4x4. With its shorter wheelbase, this new machine is more manoeuvrable than its six-wheeled counterpart, and with the absence of a third axle tyre wear is reduced, making it a cost-effective yet efficient machine.

The Bobcat stand at Hillhead 2018 will show models from the company’s latest compact loader, compact excavator, telehandler and attachment ranges, including the first appearance in the UK of the new Bobcat R-Series compact excavators ranging from 2 to 4 tonnes in weight. Another product being shown for the first time at Hillhead is the new TL30.70 compact telehandler, which provides a maximum lift capacity of 3 tonnes and a maximum lift height of nearly 7m. Bobcat will also be continuing their celebration of the 60th anniversary of the world-famous Bobcat skid-steer loader at Hillhead. Over the last 60 years, the company has maintained its market leadership in this machine category, so that one in every two skid-steer loaders sold today is still a Bobcat machine.

Bruce Materials Processing Solutions will be using Hillhead 2018 to promote their self-contained BWPOD 100 Bruce WashPod, which incorporates aggregate scrubbing, trash removal, aggregate rinsing/sizing and sand dewatering in one neat package, but visitors will also be able to view the BWB120 Bruce Water Separator, which now has the added benefit of a new, optional silt-removal system. Designed for the removal of lighter-density materials, such as plastic, paper, cardboard, wood and polystyrene from aggregates, rubble, trommel fines, and construction and demolition waste, the BWB120 Bruce Water Separator offers an effective and cost-efficient way of cleaning material and creating additional revenue streams from previously redundant materials.

Calor, the UK’s leading providers of liquefied natural gas (LNG), will be at Hillhead 2018 to show how LNG can deliver considerable financial and environmental benefits over alternative fuels, eg oil, for sites with high energy requirements, such as asphalt plants. A colourless and odourless liquid fuel, LNG is created by cooling natural gas to a temperature of around –162°C. When cooled to this temperature, the gas both liquefies and reduces in volume. This quality ensures LNG is easy to store in either horizontal or vertical above-ground vessels. One site that has already made the switch to LNG is Aggregate Industries’ Colemans Quarry. It produces 250,000 tonnes of asphalt per year and by switching from kerosene to LNG has significantly cut its fuel costs whilst reducing CO2 emissions by 17%.

Con Mech Engineers, manufacturers of a full range of ground-engaging tools, including cutting edges, end bits, grader blades, overlay end bits and recycling wear parts, have more than 15,000 parts on file to suit all leading brands of machines, as well as in-house design capabilities to manage new and bespoke projects. At Hillhead 2018 the company will be showcasing its new range of Xtreme recycling wear parts.

Corgin, suppliers of dust- and odour-suppression solutions, both mobile and installed, for hire or purchase, will have their biggest-ever presence at this year’s event. In operation at the show will be the company’s range of MistCannons along with other products. Also, on demonstration for the first time at Hullhead will be Corgin’s new MistCannon Ranger, which is designed for fully self-contained dust suppression.

Cummins engines power job sites worldwide, driving key equipment from wheel loaders and dumptrucks to crushers and air compressors. With ratings from 37kW to 895kW, the engines are renowned for uptime and fuel efficiency, and the company’s full Stage V engine line-up will be on display at the show. With an average of 10% more power and 20% more torque across the range, as well as EGR-free designs up to 12 litres, Cummins say their Stage V engines do ‘more with less’. Delivering more machine capability, more productivity and high power density, the Stage V engines feature high sulphur tolerance up to 5,000ppm, lower total cost of ownership and a range of connected solutions to ensure maximum uptime. Visitors to the Cummins stand will see the latest engines for quarrying and construction, the debut of new power units, and demonstrations of the company’s Guidanz mobile app.

Celebrating 40 years since the launch of the company’s construction equipment range, Doosan will be showing their latest generation of excavators, wheel loaders and articulated dumptrucks, with Hillhead 2018 providing the platform for the UK launch of several new product developments. These include a new version of the company’s 30-tonne DA30 ADT, which is said to set the benchmark for load-carrying performance, fuel efficiency, enhanced controllability and operator comfort, as well as providing improved reliability, durability and reduced maintenance and servicing costs. The company has also announced a number of new safety and ergonomic features on all six of its large wheel loaders, and has implemented a restyling of all models in the range, with a change of colour scheme and more dynamic curved lines designed to reinforce the robustness and power of Doosan wheel loaders.
