Brett acquire Wilding Group

CANTERBURY-based Robert Brett & Sons have further expanded their aggregates and ready-mixed concrete operations through the acquisition of Suffolk’s largest sand and gravel producer, the Wilding Group, for an undisclosed sum. The deal continues the expansion of the Brett Group from their Kent base and follows closely on the acquisition in March 2003 of Colchester-based Alresford Sand & Ballast.

In addition to their three quarries and a marine aggregates wharf in the Ipswich area, the latest deal brings Wilding’s two ready-mixed concrete plants and their plant hire and earthmoving business into the Brett Group. Wilding’s 76 employees are also transferring. Among them will be general manager Brian Culling, who will now be involved in the management of Brett’s aggregate operations in Suffolk and Essex.

Simon Russell, Brett’s group chief executive, said: ‘This takeover complements our recent acquisition of Alresford Sand & Ballast and, in terms of aggregates and ready-mixed concrete, gives us a significant presence across a wide area of the south-east and East Anglia.’

The Brett Group are now firmly established as one of the UK’s largest independent construction materials and waste-management companies, with annual sales of over £160 million and more than 1,000 employees.
