Volvo’s Mr Fix It

Modern compact excavators are used for a vast range of site jobs that were previously carried out by hand or by much larger (and expensive) pieces of equipment. This popularity has lead to the development of a range of products to suit customers’ needs and Volvo have introduced two model ranges in this segment of the market — the EC and the ECR (reduced radius).

The entry-level model in the EC range, the EC13, has a maximum operating weight of 1,361kg. It can access the smallest job sites and has a maximum digging depth of 2.1–2.2m, a gross power of 14kW and a maximum bucket capacity of 60 litres.
The EC models feature an easy-access panel to the engine and hydraulic components, while a ROPS, TOPS and FOPS cab provides solid protection for the operator. On the EC15 models and above a wrap-around counterweight provides similar impact protection to the rear compartment.

A number of undercarriage options are also available. The EC13 has a variable-width undercarriage to allow access into narrow spaces and greater stability when needed. The EC15 and EC20 XT and XTV models have a hydraulically adjustable crawler undercarriage to provide manoeuvrability at smaller sites. Models EC25, EC30, EC35 and EC45 all have an X-shaped lengthened undercarriage, while the EC55B Pro (the largest in the range) has a long undercarriage fitted as standard.

The EC55B Pro has a number of upgrade features including: a 15% increase in lifting capacity over the previous model and a 10% increase in swing torque; a counterweight to increase stability; a more efficient hydraulic pump; a modified offset cylinder locking mechanism; a quieter exhaust system; a new Yanmar Step II 16-valve engine; welded reinforcements to protect the dipper arm; and a protective metal plate on the blade cylinder.

Volvo have also confirmed that the EC range conforms to the 2006 European Machine Directive Noise Level (2000/14/CE). Noise does not exceed 94dB on the EC25 and EC30, and 96dB on the EC35 and EC45, while noise inside the cab has been reduced by a single, but significant, decibel.

The ECR range of short-swing-radius compact excavators is designed to meet the needs of operators working in confined areas. Offering high manoeuvrability and improved safety, the four models in the range comprise the ECR28, ECR38, ECR58 and ECR88.

Based on shortened superstructures, most of the ECR range feature a counterweight that turns entirely within its own track width. The cabs and canopies feature FOPS, ROPS and TOPS safety structures and have good all-round visibility. An easy-grip, high-response joystick mounted to the seat reduces operator fatigue. Designed to reduce noise both inside and outside, the cab has been installed on rubber mountings to help reduce vibration.

New-generation, direct-injection, 16-valve Volvo diesel engines provide performance and low exhaust emissions. The ECR28 and ECR38 are available with an auto-idler similar to that found on Volvo’s larger excavators. The engine is located on the side and has a cover that can be opened wide for easy access to the routine service points.
