Major infrastructure boost marks key step in enhancing capacity, efficiency and sustainability performance

SORTERA have completed the first phase of a major multi-million-pound upgrade at their Edmonton site, marking a significant step in the company’s long-term programme to boost processing capacity, operational efficiency, and sustainability performance across its London network.

Known as Project Mercury, the development is the largest infrastructure investment in the company’s history. The first of two new processing lines has now been installed and entered commissioning, delivering higher throughput, improved precision, and increased material recovery. A second line will follow in the coming months.

The upgrade will enhance flexibility and maximize recycling and resource recovery, supported by improved site safety measures, including advanced monitoring and fire prevention systems. The project is being delivered in partnership with Northern Ireland–based engineering specialists CRS, who have overseen system design and technical build.

‘Project Mercury is a landmark investment for Sortera,’ said Ian Wilkinson, operations director. ‘It demonstrates our commitment to continuous improvement and long-term infrastructure growth, ensuring we can meet customer needs now and in the years ahead.’

As Sortera expands across North and South London, Project Mercury highlights the company’s drive to invest in best-in-class technology and infrastructure, supporting sustainable progress and reinforcing its position as a leader in construction waste management.
