One-day conference update on research and development of new guidance for quarry blasting operations

THE Mineral Products Association (MPA) is supporting GEARS (Ground Engineering Applied Research Services), the University of Liverpool, and other partners in the development of new guidance for quarry blasting operations.

Across the UK, there is a vacuum of guidance in England; Welsh guidance in MTAN1 conflicts with existing authoritative literature and the British Standard; and Scotland’s PAN 50 dates back to 1996, and whilst it best reflects existing understanding and provides a sound platform of evidence, aspects are now dated.

Recent sectoral meetings with LPA planners, operators, consultants, contractors, and equipment manufacturers have indicated strong support for the studies and all indications to date are pointing to a need for a fresh look at the impacts of quarry blasting, building an up to date evidence base, updating guidance for planning conditions, and improving engagement and information sharing with the public, and thereby safeguarding future extraction.

Whilst this work continues, the findings of the research to date are to be presented at the BlastWAVE Conference 2026 at the University of Liverpool on Wednesday 14 January 2026, with a view to further developing the peer-reviewed research and studies.

The event looks to address the challenges and recent misconceptions surrounding the impacts of quarry blasting and the monitoring of those impacts, which may inadvertently threaten the future of the industry. It will be of interest to all who are involved in or interface with the quarrying industry, including: operators, contractors, consultants, planning authorities, and central government policy makers.

Sponsorship opportunities are available for this event, along with further opportunities to support continued research, to establish the necessary robust evidence base and technical understanding to develop informed guidance and policies.

Spaces at the BlastWAVE Conference 2026 are limited and early booking is advisable. In-person booking costs £60 per attendee, and virtual/online booking costs £30 per attendee. Sponsorship opportunities are available at a cost of £500 (includes two free delegate passes|). Click here to register.
