New Volvo FH16 750 for Colson Transport

Volvo FH16 750 Globetrotter 6x4 tractor unit

East Midlands waste-management firm takes delivery of flagship FH16 tractor unit

COLSON Transport have put a new Volvo FH16 750 Globetrotter 6x4 tractor unit into service – handing the keys to one of the business’ longest serving drivers as recognition of his years of hard work.

The thriving waste disposal company runs a fleet of around 80 commercial vehicles, the vast majority of which have been supplied by Volvo Trucks. The new FH16 will be paired with a tipper trailer and used for muckaway work across Nottinghamshire.

‘I’ve run Volvos all my life. Ever since I started in the industry as a driver’s mate at the age of 15, it’s been the number one for me,’ said Ryan Colson, owner of Colson Transport. ‘The business now runs around 80 tippers and grab lorries, exclusively Volvo.

‘Over the years, I’ve had most Volvo models you can imagine, and I’ve still got a couple of older FH16s in the collection. This latest version is fantastic; it looks great and delivers the performance and pulling power that you would expect.’

Supplied by Jack Castle, area sales manager at Hartshorne Group, the new high-spec FH16 is decked out in Colson Transport’s eye-catching red and white livery. The truck’s huge power comes from Volvo’s range topping D16K engine, delivering 750hp and an impressive 3,550Nm of torque, delivered via a 12-speed overdrive I-Shift transmission with construction and off-road software, which aids manoeuvrability when starting off from standstill and when driving at low speed.

To further assist the truck in off-road applications, Colson Transport has specified the FH16 with a heavy-duty bumper. Made of 3mm high-grade steel and partly covered by a thick polypropylene coating, it is designed to shield the front of the truck from scratches, dents, and broken headlights on any terrain.

In addition, an X-High chassis offers excellent ground clearance when accessing landfill sites to drop its heavy waste loads. The FH16 750 tractor unit also benefits from additional safety features, including adaptive high beam headlamps that automatically disables selected segments of the LED high beam when approaching oncoming traffic or another vehicle from behind.

There is also a downhill cruise control function, which sets a maximum speed to help prevent unwanted acceleration when travelling downhill, plus adaptive cruise control (ACC) which works at all speeds even down to zero km/h.

The driver-focused interior of the Globetrotter cab with Drive+ package features an upgraded dashboard, including new storage spaces, a fully digital 12in high-resolution instrument display, leather upholstery with coral soft textile interior trim driver seat and a 33-litre under bunk mounted fridge/freezer.

‘The massive ground clearance is perfect for this line of work, and we’ve got just about every optional extra on there that you can think of,’ commented Mr Colson. ‘The driver absolutely loves it. He’s been with me for 17 years, so we wanted to give him something special as a reward.’
