New Doosan machines for William Thompson & Son

Recycling contractor purchases DL450-3 wheel loader and DX255LC-3 excavator

WILLIAM Thompson & Son (Dumbarton) Ltd have purchased their first Doosan wheel loader and crawler excavator for work on a new soil and aggregate recycling operation. Supplied by Coatbridge-based Scotia Plant Ltd, the authorized Doosan and Bobcat dealer for the central belt of Scotland, the new Stage IIIB-compliant Doosan DL450-3 large wheel loader and DX255LC-3 excavator are working together feeding and stockpiling material for a new scalping screen.  

Andrew Thompson, a director at William Thompson & Son, said: ‘As part of the research into new equipment for our recycling operation at Riggangower, we trialled a new Doosan DL420-3 wheel loader and our operators liked the design of these new-generation Doosan machines.  

 

‘They provide extra power for the lift and carry applications we are typically carrying out and they can cover the ground quickly and have the traction to easily negotiate haul roads.  We eventually purchased the larger DL450-3 model which has a high-capacity bucket to further increase productivity.

‘The new Doosan DX255LC-3 excavator is the right size for feeding the screen with CDR material produced by construction sites throughout the area and carried to Riggangower by our fleet of tipper lorries. Riggangower is home to our operational landfill site, which is a former quarry from which we are able to recycle aggregates and soil from the overburden.  We are also using the new Doosan excavator equipped with a breaker for work in our nearby quarry at Sheephill.'

The DL420-3 and DL450-3 models are part of a new-generation of Doosan Stage IIIB-compliant large wheel loaders.  They are both powered by a fuel-efficient 13-litre Scania DC13 SCR six-cylinder diesel engine, delivering ‘best in class’ power and engine torque, with a maximum power output of 264kW at 1,800 rev/min.  

The use of SCR technology further reduces fuel consumption by around 10%.  This is combined with new ZF transmissions, with torque convertor lock up from 2nd to 5th gear, load-sensing hydraulics, a temperature controlled fan and many other features, all of which combine to further optimize fuel efficiency.  

Reduced fuel consumption is also a key feature of the new 25-tonne Doosan DX255LC-3 crawler excavator. Like the wheel loaders, in designing the new machine to meet Stage IIIB regulations, Doosan have fully utilized the increased power available by creating an optimum balance between displacement and engine power to provide up to an 11% reduction in fuel consumption, a 13% increase in productivity and overall up to an 18% increase in the productivity/fuel consumption ratio.  

The excavator is powered by a six-cylinder, turbocharged Doosan DL06K water-cooled diesel engine that provides 138kW (185hp) at 1,900 rev/min. The bucket breakout force is 17.9 tonne (ISO), while the arm breakout force is 12.8 tonne (ISO).  

Mr Thompson added: ‘Our landfill and quarry operations are next to each other so we can provide a very efficient stone in and muck off service.  In a bid to reduce costs, many construction companies are looking to increase their use of recycled aggregates – hence our decision to expand this area of our business.  Though the virgin aggregate business continues to be very competitive, we have seen increased demand for products from our Sheephill Quarry in the second half of 2013.’

Scotia Plant’s trained engineers have years of experience of repairs and servicing of heavy pant and machinery, with genuine parts readily available from the dealer’s local Coatbridge facility.
