East Kent Recycling invest in Volvo truck fleet
Mixed-model order including FE and FMX trucks helps boost efficiency and innovation in waste-recycling operations
DOVER-based East Kent Recycling have made a significant investment in their fleet with the delivery of 23 new Volvo trucks, supplied by MC Truck & Bus. The order includes a broad mix of models – 10 FL 4x2 and eight FE 4x2 skiploaders, four FMX 8x4 hookloaders, and one FMX 6x2 tractor unit – tailored to meet the company’s demanding construction, demolition, and recycling operations.
The new arrivals mean Volvo now represents 25 of East Kent Recycling’s 26-strong fleet, reflecting long-term confidence in the brand’s reliability, performance, and after-sales support.
‘We’ve always appreciated Volvo Trucks’ build quality and dependability,’ said Ky Campion, director at East Kent Recycling. ‘When the time came for a major fleet refresh, Volvo offered the most compelling all-round package. These trucks are central to our daily operations, and knowing they’re backed by Volvo’s service network gives us real peace of mind.’
The FLs and FEs are powered by DK8 engines producing 280hp and 350hp, respectively, while the FEs and FMXs benefit from Volvo’s proven 12-speed I-Shift transmission for smooth, efficient power delivery. The FMX models – equipped with Hiab Multilift bodywork – are split between 420hp, 460hp, and 540hp configurations, offering flexibility across the company’s operations.
In a landmark development, East Kent Recycling’s new skiploaders have received approval from both the DVSA and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to legally double-stack two full skips – a first in the UK. This has been achieved through a bespoke modification to the Boughton bodywork, featuring cross chains between the skip arms.
‘We worked closely with HSE and DVSA to achieve this approval, which no other UK operator currently holds,’ explained Mr Campion. “It’s a real market advantage, allowing us to reduce fuel use, cut the number of journeys, and improve turnaround times for our customers. The fact that the FL and FE could be adapted to meet these requirements was a major factor in our decision to go with Volvo.’
All 23 vehicles are supported by a comprehensive five-year Volvo Gold Contract covering preventive maintenance and repairs. The trucks will each clock between 60,000km and 80,000km annually, ensuring reliable service across East Kent Recycling’s busy schedule and reinforcing the company’s commitment to efficiency, safety, and sustainability.
