Bespoke tipper trailer for recycling firm
AGGREGATE recyclers I.J. Webb & Sons have taken delivery of their first-ever Volvo truck, a bespoke FM-440 8x4 tipper with reinforced sub-frame chassis, air suspension and a VBG coupling to allow the utilization of a trailer.
The truck will be used to transport a variety of aggregates and road planings, as well as various items of construction plant, across the North West.
Managing director Ian Webb, who currently operates a mixed fleet of six vehicles, said: ‘Instead of transporting aggregates and plant to site with two separate vehicles, we wanted one vehicle that could complete the task in a single cost-effective movement.
‘The vehicle had to have tipping capabilities and enough strength to carry up to 19.5 tonnes of plant equipment.’
To allow the tipper to act as a multi-purpose vehicle, leading tipper-body manufacturers Thompsons were called upon to reinforce the cab’s chassis with a strengthened sub-frame, while Wheelbase Engineering fitted an air-actuated VBG coupling to permit easy connection to the trailer.
‘A number of manufacturers were approached to supply the vehicle, but Volvo were my marque of choice,’ said Mr Webb. ‘As my specification was bespoke, knowledge and support from Volvo and local dealers Thomas Hardie Commericals were paramount in the decision-making process.’
I.J.Webb & Sons say they plan to pilot their new Volvo truck over the coming months before deciding whether to add further Volvo units to their fleet.
