Banks Mining seek consent for Brenkley Additional

Company submits planning application for additional extraction at Brenkley Lane surface mine

BANKS Mining have submitted a planning application to allow additional work at their Brenkley Lane surface mine, to the north of Newcastle.

The company has identified an additional 14ha area on the site from which it wants to mine more than 500,000 further tonnes of coal.

The additional work would not require any extension of the site’s current operational timescale, with the site still set to be completely restored by the end of 2021.

The Brenkley Lane mine has been operating successfully since 2010, and alongside Banks’ nearby Shotton surface mine, contributes around £35 million to the regional economy every year.

Earlier this year, Banks held two public exhibitions to discuss its plans with local people, and have used the feedback received to finalize the design of the Brenkley Additional scheme.

Mark Dowdall, Banks’ environment and community director, said: ‘Banks Mining sites deliver significant employment, supply chain and community benefits to the local area, and we are pleased that the local feedback about these proposals has been very positive.

‘The Brenkley Lane surface mine operates in a safe, responsible and efficient way, and the additional work we’re looking to undertake will help provide both continuity of employment for the many local people that work on the site and additional revenues to go towards further significant improvements of local community facilities.’
