THE first of a suite of annual ‘outputs’ reports published by BDS has been released. The report, ‘Estimated Outputs of Asphalt Plants in Great Britain 2022’, is an update of one produced annually for more than 25 years that provides output estimates and market share information for every asphalt plant and producing company operating in Great Britain. The report provides analysis and estimates down to individual plant level, summarized at county, regional, and national levels, including market shares by company.

Annually, BDS produce a suite of output-focused reports detailing estimated outputs and market share information for a range of sectors, including:

  •

    Asphalt plants in Great Britain

  • Pits and quarries and marine wharves in Great Britain

  • Movements of aggregates from rail depots in Great Britain

  • Ready-mix concrete companies in Great Britain

  • Suite of three concrete product sites in Great Britain

  • Building blocks

  • Concrete block paving

  • Paving.

The ‘Estimated Outputs of Asphalt Plants in Great Britain 2022’ report confirms that the asphalt market has gradually recovered after witnessing a sharp fall in outputs in 2020 due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, BDS estimate the asphalt market in Great Britain to be similar to that of 2021, at nearly 28 million tonnes – an increase of around 3 million tonnes since 2020.

More than 30 asphalt-producing companies are identified in the report operating around 250 asphalt plants between them across Great Britain. In 2022, Aggregate Industries became the leading producer of asphalt in GB. The four top producers of asphalt (Aggregate Industries, Tarmac, Heidelberg Materials (formerly Hanson) and Breedon) jointly account for more than 70% of the total GB asphalt market.
