Colas asphalt plant successfully modernized through installation of advanced environmental technology

IN a strong demonstration of innovation and environmental commitment, Colas Denmark’s asphalt plant in Djeld has been successfully modernized through the installation of an advanced Ammann AFA bag-filter system. The upgrade, delivered by Ammann Scandinavia, brings the older, non-Ammann-manufactured plant up to the latest environmental standards, ensuring compliance with increasingly strict emissions regulations while enhancing the overall sustainability of operations.

Located a short distance from Ammann’s new regional branch in Viborg, the Djeld facility is now equipped with one of the market’s most reliable and efficient filter systems. The AFA bag filter significantly reduces dust and particulate emissions, ensuring a cleaner operation with improved air quality and reduced environmental impact. The system is also designed for long-term durability and energy efficiency – key components in modern asphalt plant performance.

The success of the project was due in large part to the seamless co-ordination between Colas and the Ammann team, enabled by Ammann’s strategic investment in a permanent presence in Scandinavia. The Viborg branch played a pivotal role in ensuring rapid support, access to expert personnel, and on-site collaboration throughout the installation process.

‘This upgrade reflects exactly what we aim to do with our retrofit solutions – extend the life of existing plants while aligning them with today’s environmental expectations,’ said Dennis Pedersen, retrofit manager at Ammann Scandinavia. ‘Working closely with Colas, we ensured a smooth installation that brings long-term benefits both to the plant’s performance and to the environment.’

Tim Stolzenberg, general manager of Ammann Scandinavia, emphasized the broader importance of Ammann’s local presence in supporting projects such as the one in Djeld: ‘Being close to our customers is not just a convenience, it’s a core part of our philosophy,’ he said.

‘The opening of our Viborg branch is a direct response to the growing demand for sustainable, responsive, and locally supported solutions in Scandinavia and the Baltic. Projects like the Djeld upgrade show how vital it is to be available quickly, understand regional needs, and deliver customized support on the ground.

‘The collaboration between Ammann and Colas underscores how effective partnerships and technological innovation can combine to solve environmental challenges. It also showcases the role of strategic localization in delivering not just products, but full-service solutions tailored to each customer’s operational reality.

‘As the asphalt industry continues to evolve, the Djeld plant now serves as a model for how existing plant can be successfully transformed to meet modern standards. Through our retrofit expertise, Colas have extended the life of their asset while significantly reducing its environmental footprint.

‘The integration of the Ammann AFA bag filter demonstrates our commitment to helping partners to cut emissions and resource consumption by modernizing existing facilities. Our advanced filtration system not only aligns with today’s strict environmental standards but also supports long-term sustainability through durability and energy efficiency,’ said Mr Stolzenberg.

He added: ‘The growing interest in complementary technologies – such as warm-mix asphalt, optimized energy use, and circular economy practices – reinforces the broader shift we are proud to support. As regulations tighten and public expectations around sustainability grow, projects like this will serve as blueprints for similar retrofits. We are committed to continuing this momentum – building a greener, more resilient future for the road construction industry.’
