If pressure equipment fails in use, it can seriously injure or kill people nearby and cause serious damage to property. Each year in Great Britain, there are about 150 dangerous occurrences involving such unintentional releases. Around six of these result in fatal or serious injury.

This is a written procedure which explains the duties of the responsible manager in relation to the maintenance and operation of pressure systems in the workplace. Included with the procedure is a template for a register of pressure systems.

What is this?

This is a written procedure which explains the duties of the responsible manager in relation to the maintenance and operation of pressure systems in the workplace. What is required?

The person responsible for implementing this procedure must ensure:

A schedule of all pressure systems is prepared and maintained;
Emergency procedures and operating instructions are provided to anyone using the system;
The pressure system is marked with the safe operating limits;
Routine inspection and maintenance is undertaken and the system is kept in good repair;
For systems with volume of 250 bar litres or more, a written Scheme of Examination is prepared and maintained by a competent person;
A competent person examines the pressure system, in accordance with the written scheme and control measures are taken as appropriate;
Systems are not operated if they do not have a valid inspection report.

What about employees?

All employees should:

Use all provided equipment in a safe manner;
Not play with compressed air;
Report any damages or defects to equipment direct to the responsible manager.
