The Evolution Of Flexible Connecting Sleeves

BFM fitting introduced to the UK market by ProSpare

The BFM fitting is the world’s first snap-in flexible connector and looks set to make traditional connecting sleeves and clamp bands redundant. The simplest of ideas has been used to create a genuine innovation which is greatly improving powder-handling processes in many industries worldwide and has even prompted one leading figure to describe it as ‘the most significant development in powder handling for over
20 years’.

In an era of technically advanced, high-specification powder-processing equipment, conventional connecting sleeves have often been seen as the weak link. Dust leakage, product contamination, poor pressure resistance and time-consuming replacement all lead to safety concerns and increased maintenance downtime. BFM flexible connectors, however, solve all of these issues, bringing connecting sleeves into line with 21st century manufacturing capabilities.

The patented BFM system combines specially designed grooved spigots and a connecting sleeve with integral snap bands which, critically, locate internally within the spigots. Representing a completely new development in the field of flexible connectors, this special design allows effortless ‘snap-in’ installation to produce a perfect seal.

Originally developed in New Zealand, the product has been refined and perfected during the past two years. The ingenious design has been recognized as a simple but far-reaching development that has led many clients to state that they ‘cannot believe it has not been thought of before.’

The BFM fitting is site proven worldwide with impressive results. Leading global companies in a variety of sectors associated with powder handling are already using the system and, having experienced the benefits, many have taken the decision to standardize on BFM throughout their production facilities. According to ProSpare, the BFM fitting offers numerous benefits in quarrying and related applications, including:

Dust tight

The BFM’s ‘perfect’ fit creates a guaranteed 100% dust-tight seal preventing product escape to atmosphere. Flexible connectors have traditionally been one of the main sources of dust leakage in the workplace. Removing this source of emission helps create a healthier, safer working environment and assists with COSHH compliance.

Contamination

Internal sealing eradicates the age-old problem of product becoming trapped between the spigot and the sleeve. The design produces a smooth internal bore which precludes contamination.

Explosion

During an explosion, traditional sleeves, and particularly clamp bands, are prone to failure. The patented BFM internal seal actually seals more tightly as pressure increases. Seeflex 040 sleeves have undergone independent explosion testing and certification. The BFM system helps ensure explosive pressures are vented through designated vents and reduces the risk of secondary explosion, thereby making a significant contribution to safety.

Vacuum

BFM fittings are vacuum resistant up to 1,000mm water gauge. An optional sleeve featuring an anti-collapse support ring is rated to even higher vacuum resistance.

Safety

No-tool, snap-in installation eliminates the need for screwdrivers, avoiding the risk of injury during replacement. Installation of large diameter traditional connectors can be particularly difficult, often involving several fitters working in cramped, inaccessible locations. The simplicity of BFM replacement means a single member of staff can install the fitting safely. A tool-release version is also available.

Cost-effective

Connectors are available in innovative new materials which offer increased service life of up to 10 times that of rubber or fabric alternatives. More reliable operation reduces the risk of failure, product spillage and waste. A variety of alternative connector materials cater for high temperatures, extreme chemical attack, abrasive conditions and weighing applications.

Visible product flow

Clear urethane connecting sleeves allow product to be seen circulating around the plant and help pinpoint blockages should they occur.

Static dissipative

BFM connecting sleeves are available in static-dissipative materials that help reduce internal powder adherence for improved visibility. BFM recommend the use of earthing strips in potentially explosive applications.

Weighing

In order to avoid affecting delicate weighing equipment, a lightweight sleeve with exceptional flexibility has been developed.

Reduced inventory

Standard sizing helps to minimize inventory costs. An extended tail section allows spigots to be spaced appropriately to use standard-length connecting sleeves. Time and administration associated with ordering non-standard connectors can be significantly reduced. Spigots are supplied in a range of sizes from 100mm to 650mm in 50mm increments. The spigots are also designed to suit either imperial or metric pipework.

Vibratory equipment

The difficulty of making a dust-tight connection to vibratory equipment is well known and widely recognised as a challenging problem. BFM fittings have proven particularly suitable for this application. The internal sealing remains dust-tight even in arduous vibratory conditions and eliminates the chafing associated with clamp bands.

ProSpare, a trading division of ConSpare that focuses on supplying powder-processing equipment, has recently been appointed as BFM distributor for the UK and Ireland.

Managing director James Bullock commented: ‘Based on the reception that this ingenious product has received, we are confident that BFM fittings will change the face of the flexible connector market. Our distribution expertise will ensure reliable stock availability and the highest levels of technical support.’
