Volvo truck double for J. O’Doherty

Volvo FH 6x4 heavy haulage truck

Waste-management firm strengthens vehicle fleet with new FMX and FH tractor units

CELEBRATING their 30th anniversary in business this year, London-based J. O’Doherty Waste Management have taken delivery of a new Volvo FMX 6x4 tractor unit (for STGO Cat 3 work) and FH 6x4 heavy haulage truck from local dealers Volvo Truck and Bus Centre London, in Enfield.

Suitable for heavy haulage operations, the FH 6x4 truck is predominantly being used to move the company’s Volvo excavators and wheel loaders between sites, while the FMX tractor unit, equipped with a Titan trailer and Keith walking floor, transports waste within London and the Home Counties.

Matt Tyler, transport manager for J. O’Doherty, said: ‘We pretty much started out with Volvo and today the reliability and appearance of the trucks means there’s really no need to look elsewhere. We really like the Volvo product, its safety features, build quality and, frankly, the styling. The current generation trucks simply stand out.’

The Volvo FH 6x4 features a heavy-duty front bumper and is powered by a six-cylinder 12.8-litre D13K engine that produces 540hp and delivers up to 2600Nm of torque. ‘As well as our own plant, we also move Embassy Demolition Contractors’ machines around, the largest of which is a Volvo EC700B that weighs around 70 tonnes,’ commented Mr Tyler.

‘A sister company to J. O’Doherty, Embassy Demolition also operate a 64-tonne high-reach Volvo EC480 demolition excavator, so we needed a strong truck plated for 80-tonne gcw operation. The Volvo FH truck, in combination with the four-axle, rear steer Faymonville extending-bed low loader, ticks all the boxes.’

For operator comfort, the standard Globetrotter cab on FH 6x4 is equipped with a single bunk and leather upholstery. The heavy haulage truck has also been fitted with larger fuel and hydraulic tanks, as Mr Tyler explained: ‘It gives us the flexibility to use the FH in conjunction with a range of trailers, so when it is not on low-loader duties, it can be put into service with a walking floor or tipper.’

The Volvo FMX 6x4 tractor unit matches the FH in terms of cab comfort but is powered by a 480hp engine. Mr Tyler continued: ‘We already have a number of FMX 8x4 tippers and we’ve been impressed by them. It really is on the back of our experience with them that we opted to go for the FMX tractor unit. Furthermore, it mirrors the fleet look, sending a powerful message about our brand.’
