Irish aggregates business adds two more FM 420 8x4 tippers to existing haulage fleet

MOYGLARE Sand & Gravel have added two new Volvo FM 420 8x4 tippers to their busy fleet, joining two identical trucks that were put on the road earlier in the year.

The Co. Kildare-based aggregates business has a longstanding working relationship with local Volvo Trucks dealer Irish Commercials and had no hesitation in returning for this latest order.

Christy O’Neill, director at Moyglare Sand & Gravel, said: ‘We do have some other manufacturers on the books but are moving more and more towards Volvo these days. The FMs are pretty much the ideal truck for our line of work, and we know we always get a good reliable service from Irish Commercials.

‘The new trucks haven’t missed a beat for us since we put them into service. That reliability is so important, ensuring our customers will get their deliveries on time, every time.’

Decked out in Moyglare’s eye-catching light-blue livery and signwriting from Mayfield Body Repairs, each FM is powered by Volvo’s fuel-efficient D13K Euro-6 compliant Step E engine, producing 420hp and a peak torque of 2,100Nm.

This is paired with Volvo’s I-Shift automated gearbox, which constantly evaluates information such as speed, weight, road grade, and torque demand to perfectly time each gear shift. Moyglare Sand & Gravel have opted for additional I-Shift construction software, ideal for operation in the tougher road conditions the FMs will often be working in.

‘The drivers like the I-Shift transmission, it makes their life a lot easier. We always opt for drum brakes as well, rather than discs, as in our experience they are more robust and suitable when working off-road in construction sites,’ added Mr O’Neill.

Supplied by Jim Bergin, new truck sales executive at Irish Commercials, the trucks – which replace older vehicles in the business’ 20-strong fleet – will average roughly 80,000km per year, collecting materials from sister company Kildare Sand & Gravel’s quarry and delivering to customers in the building sector across Co. Kildare and the wider Leinster area.

Equipped with tough tipper bodywork from Hyva, the FMs all feature sleeper cabs with 12in, fully dynamic and high-resolution digital instrument display, plus a separate 9in side display, providing Moyglare Sand & Gravel’s drivers with easy access to infotainment, navigation assistance, transport information, and camera monitoring.

‘The drivers are very happy with their new trucks,’ said Mr O’Neill. ‘The visibility in the latest version of the FM is top drawer, the steering is also very easy and receptive, they handle very well and are great to drive.

‘We’re planning on bringing in two more 8x4 FMs at the start of 2023 and we’re also talking to the team at Irish Commercials about a five-axle FM as well. It’s a product we really like and see no reason to be looking elsewhere.’

Founded in 1991, family-run Moyglare Sand & Gravel have grown into one of the leading suppliers of certified stone, sand, and gravel in Co. Kildare.
