Tight Hold

One of the UK’s leading port operators, PD Ports, is using this JCB 409ZX compact loading shovel to help unload aggregates from ships at the Port of Tees and Hartlepool (Teesport) on England’s north-east coast.

The machine’s key function is to operate within the cargo holds of visiting vessels delivering bulk aggregates from continental Europe. PD Ports’ engineering superintendent, Jeff Pickering, said: ‘For the small 6,000-tonne coaster ships, a productive compact shovel is required due to the confined conditions.’

The 409ZX is used to move aggregates from areas of the ship’s hold where the harbour cranes cannot reach, such as under wings and in corners, and position it where it can removed by the cranes.
