Tarmac supporting new UKGBC project

Delivering Building Performance project

UK Green Building Council members joining forces to deliver designed building performance

TARMAC are supporting the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) whose members are joining forces to deliver designed building performance.

The UKGBC is launching a new piece of work that will explore industry approaches, tools and behaviours to ensure that the design, construction and operational aspects of non-domestic buildings perform in a robust and reliable way.

The Delivering Building Performance project will focus on energy performance and wider building performance in terms of health, well-being and productivity.

According to UKGBC, there is an increasingly large body of evidence which shows that there is a ‘gap’ between the expected, designed or desired performance of the building and how that building performs once delivered, occupied and maintained over time.

All too often, says the UKGBC, predictions of the whole building performance are either not accurately made or not communicated.

Emma Hines, sustainable construction manager at Tarmac, said: ‘We support the aims and ambitions of the task group as it seeks to develop a deeper understanding of how better building performance can be delivered.

‘The research provides an opportunity to explore the actions needed to address the performance gap, and highlights the importance of whole-life thinking in designing sustainability into the envelope of a structure to deliver long-term benefits.’

The research will work with UKGBC members to explore what companies are already doing to address the issue of building performance, seek out best practice, and to identify gaps and barriers that need to be overcome across the whole industry.

Julie Hirigoyen, chief executive officer of the UKGBC, said: ‘I am delighted that our members are supporting this piece of work. Huge cost, carbon and productivity benefits can be gained through a closer focus on the performance of the buildings we design, construct and operate.

‘Following the COP21 deal, this is just one of the ways in which the UK industry is showing its leadership and ambition.’
