Tarmac scoop UEPG Restoration Award

Tarmac - UEPG

Award win and special mentions in European Aggregates Associations Sustainable Development Awards 2019

TARMAC are celebrating after winning the Restoration Award at the annual European Aggregates Association (UEPG) Sustainable Development Awards 2019.

Cloddach Quarry, a sand and gravel site in Scotland, was awarded the Restoration Award for its mosaic of lakes, wetlands, islands, wet woodland and agriculture.

Lake margins at the site have been carefully shaped to encourage birdlife to the site, providing feeding, roosting, breeding and lofting with the formation of shallow wetlands, islands, land bridges and gentle sloping beaches.

Tarmac’s Panshanger Park site in Hertfordshire also received a special mention in the Restoration category, for its work to transform the former sand and gravel quarry into a country park.

In the Special Award for Biodiversity category, Sandy Heath Quarry in Bedfordshire received a special mention for heathland creation at the site, which has provided habitats for birds, invertebrates and lichens.

David Park, national restoration manager for Tarmac, said: ‘We are very proud to have received this award; it is a great recognition of all the hard work and detail that has gone into the restoration of these sites.'

Stuart Wykes, director of land and natural resources at Tarmac, added: ‘It’s great to see the team and everyone involved in these projects receive this type of recognition.

‘It is important to us that we conduct sustainable mineral extraction and restoration at the sites we operate, so receiving these awards really does reinforce the work we do when it comes to biodiversity and restoration.’

The UEPG Sustainable Development Awards illustrate European aggregates industry’s commitment to the principles of sustainable development by promoting the spread of best practice and by encouraging projects that go beyond what is required by planners or regulators, set new standards of excellence and provide an inspirational example that others can follow.
