Tarmac lay-off 200 staff at HQ

TARMAC have laid-off 200 of their central services staff in Wolverhampton as part of the company's integration with Tilcon and the other UK construction materials businesses of Anglo Industrial Minerals.

At the time of writing details of the job losses were still unclear, but the redundancies are understood to relate to former corporate functions which are no longer required under the company's new decentralized structure. In future, many head office activities will be carried out by the company's four newly devolved regional divisions.

Anglo have confirmed that a number of crucial services will be maintained centrally including finance, product development, IT and marketing, but say further redundancies at Wolverhampton are likely to follow in 2001. These, however, are unlikely to be on the same scale as this initial loss.
