Tarmac launch Sustainability Report 2010/11

Report highlights cuts in carbon and energy consumption as business becomes net user of waste

TARMAC have launched their 2010/11 Sustainability Report, highlighting the progress and performance they have made against their Sustainability Framework targets over the past year.

Using the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines, this is Tarmac’s third such report. It highlights how, since 2004, the company has reduced specific energy consumption by 15%, cut specific CO2 emissions by 11%, delivered a 92% reduction in waste sent to licensed disposal and is now a net user of waste, and delivered a 28% reduction in potable water used per unit of concrete and mortar production.

The firm has also cut lost-time injuries by 21% since 2009, has been awarded the prestigious Carbon Trust Standard in recognition of its carbon-cutting efforts, and has 100% of its products certified as ‘Very Good’ against BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products.

Commenting on the launch of the report, Dr Martyn Kenny, Tarmac’s director of sustainability, said: ‘Our new report highlights the progress that we are making against our commitments and demonstrates that sustainability is even more deeply embedded within our business strategy and culture.

‘The steps we are taking to further cut carbon and energy use, supply responsibly sourced products, reduce waste, and run an even safer business are delivering tangible benefits to the company and its customers.’

Tarmac’s Sustainability Framework informs the report and guides the company’s business strategy and targets. It focuses on four key areas that are central to the company and its customers: Sustainable Products; Climate Change; Natural Resources & the Environment; and People & Communities.

The Sustainability Report has, once again, been developed in line with Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G3 guidelines and the report data have been submitted for independent review by GRI assessors.
