Tarmac launch new asset management service

Construction materials firm says bespoke service will boost local road network efficiency

TARMAC have launched a new bespoke asset management service in partnership with highways data specialists Gaist and Metis, a civil engineering consultancy specializing in highway asset management.

The service will offer local authorities comprehensive highways condition reports to help unlock investment and deliver a preventative maintenance model to combat network decline.

Working collaboratively, Tarmac and their partners have the proven capability to offer an end-to-end asset management service, from data collection and analysis through to securing funding and scheme delivery.

Peter Hyde, Tarmac highways services director, said: ‘Highways networks are often local authorities’ biggest asset, yet many councils struggle with maintenance and are often trapped in a cycle of inadequate funding and inefficient reactive repairs.

‘Our pioneering asset management offering will empower local authorities to build a data-led and financially sound highways investment and works programme. Ultimately, these will provide socio-economic benefits that cut maintenance backlogs while delivering long-term savings.’

Steve Birdsall, managing director at Gaist, added: ‘Everything we do is led by data and by helping clients to understand their road assets, we can help them to develop an optimized strategy to promote innovation, deliver better performance and improve customer satisfaction.’

Tarmac and Gaist previously collaborated successfully on a four-year programme with Blackpool Council.  The comprehensive revitalization of the town’s roads significantly improved public opinion, while the adoption of a whole-life investment and treatment strategy is anticipated to save an estimated £100 million over the next 25 years.

Metis director Simon Jones commented: ‘Having a data-led asset management plan is key to unlocking funding both internally and externally. We have the capability to assist with evidenced-based business cases and securing Band 3 status through the Department for Transport’s Incentive Fund. Our long-term view facilitates efficiencies through our collaborative approach to optimized multi-year maintenance programming.’

Mr Hyde concluded: ‘Tarmac is uniquely placed to recommend durable highways solutions as well as to provide an understanding of the anticipated whole-life cost and performance of surfacing materials. Together with Gaist and Metis, our end-to-end asset management service is a truly collaborative approach to managing the future of the UK’s highways network.’
