Tarmac gain two responsible sourcing accreditations

TARMAC Ltd have gained two significant independent accreditations – BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products and Achilles BuildingConfidence – that reinforce the company’s commitment to producing materials in a sustainable manner and helping customers achieve the highest standards of responsible souring against schemes such as BREEAM and the Code for Sustainable Homes (CfSH).

The company has been awarded a BES 6001 rating of ‘very good’ across four complete product ranges – aggregates, ready-mixed concrete, aircrete and aggregate blocks – supplied from over 350 plants across the UK. It is believed that no other company has achieved a higher rating to date across this many product groups.

Tarmac’s entire UK organization has also been awarded Achilles BuildingConfidence certification. BuildingConfidence, an initiative set up by Achilles and Bovis Lend Lease, is becoming recognized as the standard for supplier excellence within the industry, with major contractors using the service to evaluate their supply chains, drive up performance and forge longer-lasting relationships with key suppliers.

‘Responsible sourcing is an increasingly important issue for our customers and the Government. These accreditations show that we’re taking it seriously and will help differentiate us from our competitors,’ said Tarmac’s head of sustainability, Dr Martyn Kenny.

‘Sustainability is core to Tarmac’s business strategy, and our affiliation to these two schemes gives our clients added, independent reassurance and confidence that they are sourcing their materials responsibly.

‘We offer BES 6001 across entire product ranges, not just one site, so customers get the consistency and assurance of knowing the precise input our products can make to their overall rating on schemes such as BREEAM and CfSH…irrespective of which site they buy from.’
