Rugby Cement invest in new truck fleet

RMC Rugby Cement have purchased 115 new Volvo trucks as part of an ongoing investment programme by RMC in their equipment and staff.

"Featuring RMC’s distinctive orange branding, the state-of-the-art units offer drivers the latest technology and in-cab comforts including a CD player, night heaters and air-conditioning, as well as a range of other technological features such as GPS satellite navigation and telemetry. RMC say this will help provide a more efficient delivery service to customers while helping to ensure the safety and comfort of the drivers."

"The telemetry technology will allow Rugby Cement to stay in constant contact with each truck, with information on speed, engine performance and tyre pressures etc being relayed back to a central point where it can be analysed to ensure that each truck is working at its optimum level and to identify any maintenance problems before they happen."

"Rick Sheenan, head of logistics operations for RMC’s Cement Division, said: ‘The new vehicles represent a significant investment in the future of the fleet. The telemetry technology will allow us to give our customers precise delivery times and progress updates. And because we can monitor the performance of the vehicles we are able to plan maintenance in an effort to avoid peak delivery times.’"

"While technical specifications were a prime concern, driver comfort and usability were important considerations too. ‘We consulted our drivers to find out what they wanted from their cabin before we purchased the new fleet, with the aim of providing them with the best possible working conditions,’ said Mr Sheenan."

"Some 250 drivers have been trained to operate the new cabs through RMC’s partner TNT logistics. The new fleet, which will be used to transport pressurized tankers containing dry powders, will be based at four operating depots in Tilbury, Rugby, Doncaster and South Ferriby."
