RMC strengthen coverage in the north

RMC Aggregates have strengthened their capabilities and coverage in northern England with the acquisition of the Northumberland quarrying interests of the former Ryton Sand and Gravel company from SITA Northern Quarries for an undisclosed sum.

"The purchase principally consists of two sand and gravel quarries at Crawcrook, near Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and Low Hedgeley near Powburn, Northumberland. The two quarries employ 22 people and Crawcrook is one of only two sites in the North-East which produces an asphalt sand suitable for use in the manufacture of high-grade road surfacings."

"Commenting on the acquisition, RMC Aggregates (Northern) general manager Stuart Keighley said: ‘These quarries provide a natural extension to our existing operations and will improve our ability to meet customer needs, particularly in the Newcastle area.’"

"The acquisition also brings with it Ryton Testing Services, a well respected laboratory-based operation involved in the commercial testing of building materials and products, however this is not core to the business and RMC are currently seeking a buyer."

"The quarries involved in the acquisition originally traded as Ryton Sand and Gravel Ltd and had, more recently, been part of Northern Environmental Services prior to their acquisition by SITA two years ago."
