Remote control success from FSL Electronics

Remote control is a major benefit almost anywhere it is applied, as it improves productivity and efficiency and helps prevent accidents. Users also experience reduced overheads and manpower as well as financial gains.

Ultrabeam from FSL Electronics was originally designed as an infrared system for line-of-sight operations but was quickly followed with a radio control range for operating distances of up to 750m. One of the key benefits of the Ultrabeam system is that, having been designed to withstand the rigours of quarrying operations, the lifespan of the handsets usually exceeds 10 years. Applications include the remote operation of: conveyors, pumps, loading bins, concrete pumps, movement of track-mounted crushers and screens etc.

FSL’s range of products are designed to improve health and safety in quarries with the specific aim of allowing drivers and plant operators to stay within the cab during loading, unloading and the monitoring of operations.

The Ultrabeam Truckloader system allows drivers to open bin doors at the touch of a button from the comfort of the cab and protected from dust and traffic hazards. According to FSL, quarries that have fitted this system have reported increases in productivity of more than 25%.

Other Ultrabeam solutions include the Compact, Suregrip and Metal ranges of wireless controllers.

The Compact range is designed to withstand the rigours of heavy industrial applications where there are a limited number of functions and it is necessary to use the smallest handset possible. The receiver provides options for momentary, latching and timed outputs for each relay with an optional external aerial for an operating range of up
to 150m.

The Suregrip IR range is an infrared system that offers an advantage over radio systems as it requires direct line of sight to operate. This is particularly important where accidental operation could compromise safety. The IR systems are said to be among the highest powered infrared units available, offering up to 30m operation in direct sunlight.

The Suregrip Radio range is among the most durable remote controls on the market. Applications include conveyors, pumps, hoists, loading bins etc. The receiver includes options for momentary, latching and timed outputs for each relay with an optional external aerial to give an operating range of up to 250m; there is an additional option to extend this to 750m.

The Metal range is designed for applications that demand a large number of functions to be controlled in harsh environments, such as conveyors, pumps, hoists, loading bins etc. An optional aerial provides an operating range of 250m.
