Prestigious road safety award for FM Conway

National Highways award

Company wins National Highways award for ‘Exceptional contribution to road user safety’

FM Conway, the specialist infrastructure services company, have been recognized for their commitment to road safety by winning the National Highways 2020/2021 award for ‘Exceptional contribution to road user safety’.

The company fought off tough competition to be awarded the accolade at a recent ceremony held at the ICC in Birmingham. The National Highways awards celebrate projects for their contribution to the industry in alignment with the organization’s three business imperatives: Customer, Delivery, and Safety.

FM Conway, who have a parallel approach to National Highways’ Home Safe and Well Strategy 2040 for the elimination of fatal and life-changing harm on the strategic road network, used their Big Ten in 10 strategy to risk profile their business, identifying that they travelled more than 22 million miles a year on some of the most challenging roads. Statistically, they found that occupational road risk is one of the highest risks within the business.

The company’s Occupational Road Risk initiative has targeted this risk at source, identifying improvements to safety-critical controls across the fleet and enhancing training processes for employees, as well as other road users.

Whilst innovation has always played a critical part in FM Conway’s corporate strategy, recently they have introduced some of the latest vehicle technology, including direct-vision cabs, SideScan Predict, Viewmatics, automated braking systems, and electronic wheel nut indicators, and have also improved their training processes through virtual-reality training, life-saving rules, driver risk profiling, and tailored e-learning.

With the aim of eliminating occupational road risk across the industry, the company has shared its strategy with competitors and industry bodies, as well as presenting new technologies that have been adopted, to raise health and safety standards for all.

Andrew Cox, safety, health, environment and quality director at FM Conway, said: ‘I’m so proud that we have won this prestigious award. It’s testament to our dedication and commitment to road-user safety as well as supporting National Highways in alignment with their three business imperatives: Customer, Delivery, and Safety.’
