Output estimates and industry changes for asphalt
BDS publish first estimated output report for 2025 plus associated asphalt industry survey report
EACH year, BDS produce a comprehensive suite of output and industry reports for the construction industry. These reports provide detailed output estimates and market share analysis for sites and companies operating across Great Britain. The first estimated outputs report for 2025, ‘Estimated Outputs (2024) of Asphalt Plants in Great Britain’ and associated industry report ‘Survey of the Asphalt Industry in Great Britain 2025’ have now been published.
The suite of outputs reports, published by BDS, have been produced annually for more than 25 years, providing output estimates and market share information for all asphalt, aggregates, and ready-mixed concrete sites in Great Britain. Data are estimated at individual plant level and summarized at county, regional, and national levels, including market shares by company.
The ‘Estimated Outputs (2024) of Asphalt Plants in Great Britain’ report suggests asphalt volumes have experienced a small decline, resulting in another year of reduced volumes. In 2024, BDS estimate total market outputs of c.26 million tonnes, representing a decrease of around c.0.2 million tonnes compared with the previous year. BDS believe drivers behind the decline in annual volumes for 2024 are due to the uncertainty and decline in demand for construction activity and economic pressures including cost and expanded timescales.
More than 35 asphalt-producing companies are identified in the recent report, jointly operating over 200 asphalt plants across Great Britain. In 2024, Holcim UK continued to hold the leading position for asphalt production in Great Britain, with the top four producers (Holcim UK, Tarmac, Heidelberg Materials, and Breedon) jointly account for more than 70% of the asphalt market in Great Britain.
Alongside the estimated outputs report, BDS have released the ‘Survey of the Asphalt Industry in Great Britain 2025’, which explores the history of the asphalt market in Great Britain with particular emphasis on the current state of the market and associated changes. The report highlights factors that impact the asphalt Industry, including sustainable alternatives, material volumes, and shifting demand.
