New website to increase employer involvement in vocational reform

PROSKILLS, the Sector Skills Council for the process and manufacturing sector, is calling on employers from the extractive and mineral processing industries, and related sectors, to help shape the future of vocational qualifications.

The Sector Skills Council is urging employers to visit a new website launched this week to raise awareness of the current large-scale overhaul of sector-based qualifications.

The website, www.businesslink.gov.uk/vocationalqualifications, is part of a joint project with Business Link and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, designed to ensure that businesses are at the heart of the changes.

The radical reforms that are being developed will offer employers and their staff more choice and flexibility to select the qualifications for their specific needs.

The new qualification structure, which will link directly to new or existing training programmes, aims to give confidence to learners and employers that skills and knowledge that are learnt are properly assessed, nationally recognized, and can be applied in the workplace.

‘The new vocational qualification structures for the industry reflect what actually happens in the workplace and will add value to the training and learning that is taking place,’ said Jonathan Ledger, extractive & mineral processing industry lead at Proskills.

‘The reformed qualifications could transform the way training is carried out and assessed, and will further encourage employers and learners to continue to improve skills levels in the industry.’

The changes come amid a wider reform of vocational qualifications across all sectors. The Vocational Qualification Reform programme will see qualifications in every industry streamlined so that they are easier to understand and access.
