New speed sensor delivers improved motor control feedback

Sunfab Hydraulic introduce new speed sensor for SCM Series of compact piston motors

Sunfab Hydraulics have announced a new speed sensor for their SCM Series of compact piston motors. The two-channel hall-effect sensor allows customers to accurately check and control the rotational speed and even the direction of the hydraulic motor.

Anders Norberg, project manager, said: ‘We started by conducting a comprehensive competitive analysis and then looked at the demands of our customers and an in-depth assessment of where best to place the sensor on the motor. We’ve also spent a lot of time and effort doing field tests, to ensure both functionality and quality.’

Sunfab’s new sensor is a two-channel differential hall-effect sensor, PNP. The sensor has two frequency outputs, which both give square waveform signals, phase shifted ~90º. It can be used at high temperatures. The speed is detected by the cylinder block’s teeth and, since the sensor operates with two channels, the direction of rotation can also be determined. Motors prepared for speed sensors can easily be retrofitted with sensors.

‘Currently the sensor (or casting preparation) can be ordered on all of our ISO and SAE motors from 12 to 64 cc/rev, which covers about 80% of the market. As demand increases, design solutions for our other models and sizes will be added, too.’ Mr Norberg added.

Speed sensors give valuable feedback in applications like high-pressure water pumps, vacuum pumps, radiator fans, fuel pumps, tracked excavators or other areas where precise check and control of the rotational speed of the motor is required.

Since the 1950s, Sunfab have developed into leading international manufacturers of hydraulic pumps and motors. Represented in more than 60 countries, with subsidiaries in UK, Germany, Spain, France, Italy and North America. Development and manufacturing take place at the head office in Hudiksvall, Sweden.

Sunfab's compact bent-axis motors, available in ISO, SAE, DIN & ‘M2’ cartridge flanges, are of both robust design and minimal dimensions; a high starting torque and a high level of reliability make the motors particularly suitable for both mobile and stationary hydraulics.

Sunfab's pumps have displacements from 12cc to 130cc, and are available as single-flow, dual-flow and variable pumps with continuous pressure ratings up to 400 bar and ISO, SAE and DIN flanges.
