New JCB Wastemaster for Dunmow Waste Management

JCB 457 HT Wastemaster

Five-speed 457 HT Wastemaster helps deliver improved productivity for Essex-based recycling firm

DUNMOW Waste Management have added a JCB 457 HT Wastemaster wheeled loader to their growing fleet in order to handle an increasing volume of material at the company’s Chelmsford head-office site.

Painted in Dunmow’s distinctive white livery, with highly visual red chevrons at the rear, the machine is equipped with super high-lift loader arms, a 4.5 cubic metre toe-tip bucket and SG Revolution solid tyres. The loader also comes with a full rear radar system, auto lubrication, a weighing system, fire suppression and a deluxe operator’s seat.

Dunmow had chosen to specify the machine with an optional five-speed ZF transmission with lock-up torque converter, which locks the transmission in every gear from second to fifth to prevent losses and reduce fuel consumption.

Although this transmission has been primarily designed to provide maximum efficiency on longer load and carry operations, the company says it not using its bespoke JCB Wastemaster loader for maximum travel speeds.

Instead, directors Sam Malins and Edward Barnes calculate that the third gear in the five-speed transmission is lower than third gear in the four-speed box, which was used on the firm’s previous 456 loader. This lower ratio allows the operator to use third gear smoothly and productively within Dunmow’s recycling operation, reducing fuel consumption and increasing performance.

‘The main benefit is the torque lock-up from second gear, so there is no wastage,’ explained Mr Barnes. ‘Third gear in the four-speed transmission was too high, so the machine was too fast. The five-speed transmission option preserves the tyres and reduces fuel consumption.

‘The operator is very happy with it – it’s a lot more nimble and so smooth. We hope to get a 5% fuel improvement in the long term. It’s never going to be 20-30%, but 10 litres per day is all worth it. The loader also has a Stage IIIB/Tier 4 Interim engine and as it spends half of its time in an enclosed building the significant reduction in emissions was an important factor for us.’

Dunmow Waste Management have been in the waste and recycling business since 1992, mainly in skip hire and waste disposal, serving construction, demolition, domestic and local authority customers. With 70 staff operating throughout North London and Essex, Dunmow have a licence to handle up to 150,000 tonnes of waste material at the Chelmsford site each year.

The recycling contractor runs 20 trucks on the road and operates a mixed fleet of materials handlers and wheeled loaders, including a JCB JS130 tracked excavator, a JCB 436 Wastemaster wheeled loader and the new 457 HT Wastemaster.

Dunmow’s previous 456 loader had completed 7,000 hard hours of operation and having had experienced support from local dealer Greenshields JCB, the decision to acquire a 457 HT machine was an easy one to make.

Greenshields JCB will provide complete back-up for the machine under a three-year repair and maintenance plan and both Dunmow and the dealer have instant access to machine performance data through JCB’s LiveLink telematic monitoring system, which is a standard feature on the 457 HT Wastemaster.
