More Volvo machines for SRC Aggregates

Volvo dumptruck and wheel loader

Quarry operator invests in new fleet of Volvo excavators, wheel loaders and articulated haulers

FOLLOWING their purchase of a Volvo EC220D crawler excavator a year ago, SRC Aggregates have added more Volvo machines for extraction activities at two quarry sites in Essex.

The new additions include: two 30-tonne A30G articulated haulers; an L120H and an L150H wheel loader, another EC220D; and a slightly larger 25-tonne EC250E crawler excavator. The machines are currently working at SRC Aggregates’ Crown Quarry, near Colchester, and Highwood Quarry, near Great Dunmow.

According to SRC director David Hunter, the main driving factors for choosing Volvo again were down to the performance and reliability of the existing EC220D, together with the overall package on offer and anticipated residual values.

Mr Hunter also noted the significant fuel savings with the latest machines. The EC220D unit, for example, benefits from a Volvo Stage IIIB D6 engine, delivering 175hp (129kW) of power and 849Nm of torque. The engine, combined with an improved hydraulic system featuring larger pumps, significantly improves hourly fuel consumption with shorter cycle times.

The larger EC250E excavator is equipped with an eight-litre Volvo engine (215hp) that meets Stage IV Final regulations. Operators can select the best work mode for the task at hand, ensuring optimum performance and fuel efficiency. Modes include: I-idle; F-fine; G-general: H-heavy; or P-power, with the machine automatically setting the appropriate engine speed for the work mode.

There is also a new Eco mode feature that works in G, H or P mode. Pump flow is controlled for combined digging and swinging operations to reduce the flow loss through the overload relief valves, while maintaining digging power and maximum swing torque. Eco mode provides better fuel efficiency without loss of performance in most operating conditions.

Also designed to be highly productive and fuel-efficient are the new Volvo L120H and L150H wheel loaders. The machines are powered by eight-litre and 13-litre Volvo Stage IV Final engines, respectively, enhanced by a well matched powertrain and intelligent hydraulics that supply power only on demand.

To help further reduce fuel consumption and cycle times on the new H-Series wheel loaders, automatic power shift (APS) and fully automatic power shift (FAPS) functions have been incorporated to automatically adjust the machine gears in line with engine speed and travel speed.

Another intelligent feature, the reverse-by-braking (RBB) function, automatically reduces the engine rev/min and applies the service brakes when the operator changes the direction of the machine. This not only conserves fuel but also reduces stress on the drivetrain, thereby extending component life.

The new Volvo A30G articulated haulers are powered by 11-litre Volvo Stage IV engines, developing 357hp. The trucks have a load carrying capacity of 28,000kg and a body capacity of 17.5 cubic metres. The articulated haulers feature Volvo-designed and manufactured powertrain components, suitably matched to each other for optimum performance, rimpull and fuel consumption.
