Mixed fortunes for US aggregates output

"AN estimated 287 million tonnes of crushed stone were produced for consumption in the US in the first quarter of 2001, according the US Geological Survey’s latest quarterly mineral industry survey. This represents a decrease of 1.8% compared with the same period last year. The estimated output of construction sand and gravel over the same period was 199 million tonnes, an increase of 2.5%."

The USGS says the decrease in the production of crushed stone was largely due to unfavourable weather conditions in most regions of the US combined with a slowdown in commercial and private construction work during the first quarter.

"The five leading States in the production of crushed stone in the first quarter were Texas, Florida, Georgia, Missouri and Virginia, who between them represented 35.6% of the US total. The five leading sand and gravel States were California, Texas, Arizona, Washington and Nevada, representing 43.8% of the total."
