Mike Smith to support new Diploma in Quarry Technology

AS part of a package of support for the new Diploma in Quarry Technology to be offered by the University of Derby from September 2007, The Institute of Quarrying will be transferring Mike Smith from his current role as general manager to a new full-time post dedicated to the course.

The two main objectives are first to ensure the smooth transfer of the DAPS (Doncaster Assisted Private Study) course from its current home at Doncaster College to Derby, where it will be accredited as a university diploma.

Secondly, Mike will be managing a major project to convert the whole of the existing ‘hard copy’ teaching material into an e-learning format for future students, who will enjoy online access to much wider range of educational resources than has previously been available.

The upgrading of the course and its implementation for online delivery is an integral part of the Institute’s strategy to both improve the means of gaining the underpinning knowledge required to support occupational competence and also to make access to the course as open and user-friendly as possible.

A further part of the plan is to upgrade Mike’s existing role as general manager to that of deputy director responsible for running the day-to-day operation of The Institute of Quarrying. Details of this vacancy can be accessed by clicking the link below; the Institute would be interested to hear from anyone who would like to receive further details of this varied and challenging role. The closing date for applications is 14 March.
