Large blaze at Lower Compton landfill site

WILTSHIRE Fire & Rescue Service were called to a large fire at Hills Waste Solutions’ landfill site at Lower Compton, near Calne, at around 5.30am on Saturday 13 February.

The incident required the attendance of eight pumping appliances, two water carriers, two rope rescue teams, an emergency support unit, a control unit, a bulk foam carrier and six supporting managers.

The fire involved 100 square metres of plastic sheeting covering a steeply sloping section the landfill, which caused considerable difficulties for the fire-fighters, who had to be safely secured with ropes in order to tackle the blaze.

Staff from Hills Waste Solutions who discovered the fire launched the on-site emergency plan and provided further assistance to the Fire & Rescue Service.

In a joint statement, Wiltshire FRS and Hills Waste Solutions confirmed that no injuries from the fire were reported and no environmental impact was found.

The Health Protection Agency and Environment Agency, who both consulted with on-site fire service managers, concluded that no further action was necessary.

Wiltshire FRS remained at the scene for several hours after the flames had been extinguished, dealing with hot spots and making sure that the fire had not spread to underground landfill material.

The cause of the fire is unknown and still under investigation.
