JCB’s heavy-duty quarrying range

Launched this year, JCB’s latest tracked excavator models are said to be the most powerful and efficient machines the company has ever offered. Featuring revolutionary Tier III-compliant engines, the new 20–33 tonne models are not only more productive, but also more comfortable and cheaper to run.

Joining the 46-tonne JS460 – the flagship of JCB’s quarrying fleet – the new machines feature: up to 25% more power; up to 27% more torque; up to 12% less fuel consumption; a 5dB(A) reduction in engine noise; reduced emissions in line with latest legislation; and further improvements to operator comfort.

According to JCB, the new JS 200/210/220/235 Auto, JZ235/255 Auto and JS240/260 Auto tracked models all boast the power and functionality to work in the quarrying environment alongside the established JS330 and JS460 machines – designed specifically for the task.

JCB’s latest JS330 Auto excavator has 13% more power, rising from 178kW to 202kW, while the increased torque of 1,080Nm is now developed 200 rev/min lower at 1,500 rev/min. The JS460, the largest machine in the range, is designed to perform in the harshest of environments and is aimed mainly at the bulk aggregate extraction, quarrying and demolition industries in Europe and North America. Weighing 46 tonnes, it produces a net engine power of 228kW.

To complement the excavator line-up, JCB wheeled loading shovels are designed to offer high breakout forces and operational flexibility. The improved JCB 456e offers the added benefits of more sophisticated operation, a larger field of vision, increased comfort, and improved performance and serviceability.

It also features a new electronic engine that conforms to Tier III emissions legislation. The highly advanced engine gives smoother machine operation and delivers a higher net engine power of 205hp. Other improvements to the machine include: a 6% increase in full-turn tipping load; a revised cooling pack to improve access for cleaning; and refined loader hydraulics to maximize loader accuracy and productivity.

These new improvements have been introduced across the 456e range, including the ZX model typically specified for the quarrying industry. In addition, the comfortable automotive-style cab offers a series of refinements and has increased in volume from 2m3 up to 3m3, with the open layout and larger glass area contributing to an even greater perception of space.

The new JCB 456e also features completely redesigned bodywork and modern styling incorporating extended body panels, corner casting and a centre-hinged section for improved access to the cooler. In addition, the new counterweight gives the model a more effective departure angle when stockpiling or working on inclines.
