IQ past president launches education initiative

PETER Fuchs, son of polar explorer Sir Vivian Fuchs and a past president of The Institute of Quarrying, is to relaunch the Fuchs Foundation as an educational charity.

Initiated by scientists at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) to mark Sir Vivian Fuchs

In 2005 the trustees relaunched the Foundation as an educational charity with the aim of sending young school teachers on expeditions to polar regions to carry out scientific projects that will be translated into National Curriculum material for school children.

In early November 2007 the first four teachers will depart for the Ellsworth Mountains in Antarctica on an expedition celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (TAE) 1957-58, which turned into a race to the south pole between Dr Fuchs and Sir Edmund Hillary.

It is in memory of Sir Vivian Fuchs that the the Foundation hopes to inspire future generations of school children, and to instil in them a sense of curiosity, self-reliance, self-determination and challenge.

To mark the relaunch, a major charity event will be held at the Royal Geographical Society on Wednesday 24 November, when Peter Fuchs and others will give lectures on the history of the TAE and its scientific legacy.
