Innovative new vehicle start-up system

Cheshire-based MP Safety Systems Ltd have introduced an innovative vehicle start-up system designed to provide significant benefits for operators of mobile plant in quarries and on construction sites. The system has already been taken up by Tarmac, who are benefiting from its use on 23 of their wheel loaders.

Utilizing a simple 4-digit keypad, the system was initially developed as a health and safety measure for use on wheel loaders, excavators and other quarry machinery. Once installed, the operator has to enter a specific numeric code on the keypad in order to start the machine. If the vehicle is left unattended for more than 2min, the system switches the engine off and the vehicle can only be restarted by re-entering the code, thereby preventing unauthorized personnel from driving the machine and reducing the risk of accidents on site, as well as preventing vehicle theft.

The system also offers quarry managers a number of other benefits. For example, in today’s business climate, where cost-efficiency is a key issue, the automatic cut-out facility provides substantial savings in fuel costs and reduces wear and tear on the engine. It has been estimated that, out of 7,500h of machine use, some 2,500h would have previously been idle time. With environmental impact and sustainability also being of key concern within the quarrying industry, the reduction in emissions brought about by the reduction in idle time represents another significant benefit.

MP Safety Systems say the vehicle start-up system can be fitted to any 12V or 24V machinery with a diesel engine and cabin. The company offer nationwide on-site installation for individual machines or entire fleets.
