Giant trommel for hire

Plant-hire specialists SE Davis & Son Ltd have added a Hercules-type trommel screen to their extensive fleet of crushers, screeners and other mobile plant. The trommel is thought to be the largest mobile unit of its kind currently available in the UK and is said to be attracting considerable interest from quarrying companies.

It has already been employed by Brett Landscaping to separate useable stone from spoil; by Aggregate Industries’ Bardon Hill Quarry to produce rip-rap from run-of-quarry granite; and by Tarmac’s Gore Quarry to separate topsoil from overburden (working in conjunction with the quarry’s own mobile screener).

Since it was purchased SE Davis have made a number of improvements to the machine’s design. The original hydraulic conveyors, designed to eject screened material, have been removed in favour of a more reliable gravity discharge method. To facilitate this change the trommel has been fitted with new hydraulic legs that provide sufficient clearance for large wheel loaders to remove the screened material from beneath the machine.

In addition, the trommel’s diesel/electric power pack, which had been sited immediately behind the machine’s 75-tonne capacity reciprocating feed hopper, was rehoused in its own steel container. This allows the power pack to be sited remotely from the trommel screen to minimize the risk of damage when the hopper is being loaded.
