CTRL projects restore former mineral workings

PETER Brett Associates (PBA) have been involved in two major Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) projects which are helping to restore two former mineral workings. On the Maidstone to Lenham section of the CTRL contractors Hochtief/Norwest Holst have relocated two former Kent County Council landfills to a new contained landfill in Marley Pit, a former sand quarry near Harrietsham. PBA designed the landfill and provided the quality and environmental monitoring for the work, as well as carrying out environmental monitoring for the entire 20km section of railway construction.

Meanwhile, at the Thames Tunnel portal near Swanscombe, contractors Hochtief/Murphy JV are currently involved in major dewatering and tunnelling work beneath flue dust tips and other contaminated land. Around 10% of the tunnelling spoil is to be part treated with cement to promote rapid hardening of the deposited material to form a construction platform for the redevelopment of a former chalk pit at Craylands. PBA are assisting the joint venture with environmental monitoring and control including the necessary licencing and consents.
