ContiTech to acquire Metso special belt operations

GERMAN conveyor belt group ContiTech Transportbandsysteme GmbH, of Northeim, are to expand their position in the market by taking over the Moers plant of Metso Minerals (Deutschland) GmbH.

Around 60 employees at the plant, which is part of the Finnish Metso Group, manufacture Flexowell and Pocketlift conveyor belts, which are primarily used in the mining, chemical and steel industries to transport loose bulk material up steep and vertical inclines.

ContiTech plan to continue manufacturing and engineering at the Moers plant.

Commenting on the acquisition, Hans-Jürgen Duensing, head of the ContiTech Conveyor Belt Group business unit, said: ‘By doing this we are globally opening up additional markets for ContiTech and are developing our capacities for special conveyor belts.

‘The purchase represents the acquisition of additional know-how and numerous special belt patents for ContiTech. This will consolidate our market position.’

Metso say the sale is part of their strategy to develop and simplify their current production network, the aim of which is to improve the competitiveness of the business and to further develop customer service.

Both sides have agreed not to disclose the purchase price. The transfer of business is planned to take place on 1 May 2010, subject to relevant regulatory approvals.
