CEMEX receive UN award

CEMEX have received a special accolade at the World Business and Development Awards from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and International Business Leader Fund (IBLF). The company was recognized for its contributions towards the Millennium Development Goals project through several of its programmes that foster and facilitate development.

Among the community development projects for which CEMEX are responsible for is Centros Productivos de Autoempleo, which involves establishing community centres and helping low-income families to produce basic building materials for the construction or expansion of their homes. The programme has already benefited over 3,000 families through more than 190,000 sq m of construction.

The centres offer families temporary employment in which they help manufacture concrete blocks used for building. Half of the blocks produced are then given back to the families for use in constructing, repairing or extending their homes, while the other half is bought by municipal or state authorities.

The scheme recently played a key part in CEMEX’s strategy to aid the victims of Hurricane Alex in the northern Mexico state of Nuevo Leon. In addition to opening 10 community centres, CEMEX donated 550 tonnes of cement for the production of concrete blocks, as well as materials for the creation of 220 new homes.

This is the third time in four years that the company has been recognized by the UN for delivering viable, innovative solutions for low-income families to help improve their quality of life.
