Caterpillar unveil new C13B engine

Cat C13B engine

Latest 12.5-litre offering specially designed to meet new EU Stage V emissions standard

CATERPILLAR have expanded their industrial engine range with the addition of the new Cat C13B unit. The six-cylinder 12.5-litre engine will leverage a proven, reliable core of components with more than 68 million hours of real world experience and complementary technology to the C9.3B launched last year and now nearing production.

‘Our customers expect reliability and durability, but they need it from a simpler, lighter package with more power and that’s what we’re giving them with our new engines,’ said Jeff Moore, product manager for 7.2-litre to 18-litre engines.

Designed to meet Stage V and Tier 4 Final emissions standards, the C13B engine combines upgraded air, electrical and after-treatment systems to produce a power range from 340–430kW and up to 2,640Nm of torque out of a package that is said to be 30% lighter at these performance levels, when compared with previous models.

Increased performance is accentuated with transparent after-treatment regeneration to maximize uptime and improvements in fuel consumption, minimizing the cost of ownership. As with all Caterpillar 9-litre to 18-litre engines, the C13B will be offered in a number of configurations to provide OEM customers the flexibility to reduce the cost of installation.

Engine mounted after-treatment (EMAT) and full industrial power unit (IPU) configurations are offered out of the company’s US factory in Seguin, Texas. Remote mounted after-treatment is also possible, with minimal installation requirements between the engine and after-treatment.

Caterpillar will also certify existing Stage IV and Tier 4 Final engines across their C13, C15 and C18 product range to meet Stage V emission standards. Dual-label certification – Stage V and Tier 4 Final – will be offered across Caterpillar’s 9-litre to 18-litre products (250–597kW), giving customers the opportunity to commonize their engines across regions.

According to Caterpillar, their DPF solutions in this range have more than 282 million hours of proven performance in the field. There are no changes to customer interface points for existing products, providing a seamless changeover and allowing customers to focus on their own product improvements.

Mr Moore commented: ‘The C13B and all Cat industrial engines are designed with the customer in mind. We meet emission standards while delivering increased power density, fuel efficiency and reduced complexity to add real value for our customers.’
