Caterpillar cut 175 agency jobs at Desford

Company blames ongoing economic problems in the Eurozone and the US for job losses in Leicestershire
CATERPILLAR have axed 175 temporary agency worker jobs and launched a voluntary redundancy programme for permanent staff at their backhoe loader assembly plant at Desford, in Leicestershire.
A figure for the voluntary reduction in the permanent workforce has not been announced.
The job losses follow a decline in orders, which the company has blamed on ongoing economic problems in the Eurozone and looming financial uncertainty in the US.
The move comes just two years after Caterpillar created 300 new jobs at the factory in response to a surge in global demand.
As recently as last December, Caterpillar announced a UK investment of £50 million to boost output at Desford and their steel fabrication facility in Stockton.
A spokesperson for the company said that after a good start to 2012, economic growth and demand from customers around the world had not reached anticipated levels.
