Cat duo for Simon Sand & Gravel

Jersey-based Simon Sand & Gravel Ltd have taken delivery of a new Cat 730 articulated dumptruck and a Cat 330C long-reach excavator from Finning (UK). Both machines will be used for the extraction of sand for construction and building projects throughout Jersey.

The family-owned business was established in 1909 to service the needs of the island’s building contractors. Based in St Ouen’s Bay, the company now operate a mixed fleet of four machines and extract in excess of 70,000 tonnes of sand and gravel a year.

The Cat 330C will be used to excavate sand and gravel from above and below the largest stretch of fresh water on the island. With a large counterweight and drive assembly, it is equipped with broad base plates for stability and super-long clearing equipment for work on embankments. The cab maximizes operator space, providing greater comfort and thereby reducing operator fatigue.

The Cat 730 will be used to transport materials to the processing plant. The high-powered machine features an electronically controlled transmission for high horsepower and system integration.

Jason Simon, managing director, commented: ‘One of the key factors that attracted us to the Caterpillar product was the ability to configure the machines to our requirements. The bespoke technology allowed us to specify a super-long-reach excavator built to our requirements rather than it being added to as an afterthought.’
