Building Material Analysis meeting 2011

Sustainability will be the key theme at this year’s BMA workshop at the University of Halle in Germany

THE Mineralogical/Geochemical Group of the University of Halle, in co-operation with PANalytical, will be holding the 2011 Building Materials Analysis (BMA) workshop from 28–30 March in Halle, Germany.

The focus of the three-day event is sustainability and how analytical methods, including X-ray techniques, can contribute to the building materials industry. Delegates will hear about methodology as well as industry trends, new instrumentation, applications in process and quality control, and recent research and advances in the science behind the analysis.

The workshop will begin with a keynote presentation by X-ray analysis pioneer Dr Hugo Rietveld (pictured), who will explain the background to his ‘Rietveld refinement method’, which is now a universal tool used to characterize crystalline materials. PANalytical specialists and other renowned experts in the field of building materials will also be on hand to discuss applicable X-ray techniques and methods.

On day two, speakers from leading cement companies will outline the results of state-of-the art research that will shape up the future. More specifically, the latest industry trends to improve sustainability during the cement manufacturing process will be discussed. In addition, case studies will be presented that illustrate the practical ways in which X-ray analysis is helping the cement industry to overcome real-world problems.

Of special interest to many will be a presentation on the principle and benefits of on-line neutron analysis in the cement industry, as well as a presentation on the effect of supplementary cementitious materials in blended cement.

A series of talks on the final day will highlight novel research and provide a glimpse of the future of building materials analysis.
