Company recognized for outstanding achievements in health, safety and well-being

AT this year’s Mineral Products Association (MPA) Health and Safety Awards, Brett Group were awarded the ‘Safer Together’ award for driving significant reduction in serious harm within the workplace, and the John Crabbe Memorial Trophy, which recognizes outstanding achievements in health and safety.

Sharing crucial information about how to make the industry’s workplaces safer and celebrating the achievements of those involved, the MPA Health and Safety Awards highlight outstanding actions, initiatives, innovations, and leadership practices, from individuals and small teams to major global players.

Brett Landscaping and Building Products were recognized for their concerted efforts to uphold the highest standards in health and safety, using the MPAs ‘Vision Zero’ scheme to create a safer environment across their manufacturing sites at Poole, Pocklington, Barrow-Upon-Soar, and Cliffe.

The ‘Safer Together’ award entry focused on how the teams have worked to make sure that health and safety is a collaborative effort, that all employees have the opportunity to give feedback and put their ideas forward in group discussions, and that they stay motivated about health and safety matters. Some of the activities include regular health and safety roadshows to discuss the core values of ‘Vison Zero’, the ‘Fatal Six’ topics, and other site issues and improvements.

Brett Landscaping also received commendations from the MPA for their dedicated work focused on on-site improvements, including safer handling of inbound and outbound materials, and safer maintenance and housekeeping.

Lee Bell, site manager at Brett Landscaping’s Cliffe site, said: ‘I’m really proud that we can do this on an individual site basis. We take a lot of time out from our busy production schedule; we stop everything. It’s a good opportunity for the whole site to come together and discuss issues or topics that are raised and we see actions from it; it’s really positive.’

Brett Group were awarded the coveted John Crabbe Memorial Trophy for companies with more than 250 employees for outstanding performance in health, safety, and well-being. It is awarded to companies that can demonstrate a strong health and safety culture, where all employees are proactive in managing their own and their colleagues’ safety, backed by regular activities and initiatives.

Richard Baldry, Brett Landscaping’s managing director, commented: ‘Our sole purpose at Brett Landscaping is to keep people safe. Our Vision Zero strategy has delivered an incredible reduction in incidents across our business. We’ve been able to develop a strategy based on the available knowledge of the ‘Fatal Six’, ‘Vision Zero’, and ‘Six Core Values’ work, which fits perfectly with what we were trying to achieve at the outset of this programme.

‘We’re part of the MPA, and to win an award like this is fantastic recognition from our peers that a business like ours has been able to affect a significant shift in culture that has led to people being safer on site every single day.’
