A trio of new Volvo tippers for Chartrange

Volvo FMX 8x4 rigid tipper truck

Cheshire-based recycling operator purchases its first-ever Volvo FMX trucks from Thomas Hardie Commercials

CHARTRANGE have increased the size of their machinery fleet with three specially chosen new Volvo FMX 8x4 rigid tipper trucks, following a rigorous trial process.

Simon Redfern, transport manager for Chartrange, said: ‘These are our very first Volvo trucks. At the beginning of the year we looked at increasing the size of our fleet and tried demonstrators from a number of manufacturers. Thomas Hardie Commercials initially gave us a Volvo FMX-420 to trial and then later in the process we took a Volvo FMX-410 on a one-week test.

‘The decision on which trucks to use wasn’t taken lightly, but in the end we decided the Volvo FMX was absolutely the right truck for us. Now, the three trucks have been delivered we are convinced this was the right way to go. The Volvo FMX tippers are clearly made for the job.’

The trucks are delivering payloads of up to 19.5 tonnes in 15 cubic metre-capacity Taperlite HD tipper bodies, gaining Whole Vehicle Type Approval and fitted by Boweld of Flintshire.

‘Our business is predominantly bulk excavation and the subsequent supply of processed aggregates,’ said Mr Redfern. ‘Our four-acre site in Dukinfield processes in the region of 40,000 tonnes per year, so it is essentially a recycling centre serving an area within a 50-mile radius. Each Volvo FMX truck is expected to cover some 60,000km per year, hauling both material generated by bulk excavations and the processed aggregates which is used for ground stabilization and as a sub-base in road construction.’

The Volvo FMX tipper boasts high ride chassis to enhance off-road capability and is powered by an 11-litre Volvo D11K engine (410hp) developing up to 1,950Nm between 1,000 and 1,400 rev/min. It also benefits from a Volvo 12-speed I-Shift automated gearbox – the innovative fuel-saving transmission system exclusive to Volvo Trucks.

All the FMX trucks are being maintained on a three-year, full repair and servicing contract with Thomas Hardie Commercials.
