A hat trick for Bardon Concrete

BARDON Concrete, part of the Aggregate Industries group, have won the MPA-BRMCA Excellence in Customer Service Award for the third consecutive year. The company received the industry accolade for the outstanding level of engagement and service offered to Volker Stevin Marine UK at the New Tyne Tunnel project.

Totalling 3,400 tonnes, the contract consisted of concreting 16 floor and a further 16 wall/roof sections within four main tunnel segments, all of which were heavily reinforced with prefabricated steel reinforcing bar.

The large volumes, difficult positioning requirements and shrinkage and cracking considerations meant that the concrete design and performance criteria were complex, with a low water : cement ratio concrete design, a high-consistency slump and the right workability period critical to a successful end result.

Steve Hamilton, North East and West Yorkshire area manager for Bardon Concrete, said: ‘The whole Bardon Concrete team is thrilled to pick up this award for the third year in a row. The competition is always tough and after winning in 2007 for our Coniston Village water upgrade project for United Utilities, as well as in 2008 for our work for Edmund Nuttall at the Queen Street contract in Glasgow, to make it a hat trick is a massive achievement.

‘Customer service is at the heart of Bardon Concrete, and that means doing what is required to get the job done to the best possible standard – in this case that involved extensive technical trials as well as weekend, overnight and unusually large pours.’

Gerrit Smit, project manager at Volker Stevin Marine UK, said: ‘Bardon Concrete were positive from the start, concentrating on how they could work with us within such demanding and exacting requirements.

‘We were particularly concerned about the roof and wall pours given the complexity of the mix and timings of the pours, but Bardon’s area manager, Steve, worked with our technical team on a strategy which saved us time, risk and cost.’

Ann Widdecombe MP presented the award to Steve Hamilton at the awards ceremony at the London Marriott Hotel.
