Michelin introduce new off-road tyres for articulated dumptrucks

First published in the November 2013 issue of Quarry Management as Enhanced Mobility and Versatility

Michelin’s recently introduced XADN+ tyre now available in sizes 23.5 R25 and 26.5 R25

At quarries and large infrastructure work-sites, vehicles need to remain mobile at all times despite changing conditions and difficult terrain. To meet the dual requirement for versatility and mobility, articulated dumptrucks (ADTs), in particular, rely on tyres that are perfectly suited to their needs, which is why, last year, Michelin introduced the XADN+ tyre in size 29.5 R25. One year on from its launch, Michelin say the XADN+ is now the market’s best-selling 29.5 R25 tyre.

Offering enhanced safety and up to 15% greater longevity compared with the previous-generation XADN tyres, the Michelin XADN+ helps to improve productivity at quarries and large infrastructure worksites, and this year the XADN+ line-up has been extended to sizes 23.5 R25 and 26.5 R25, to meet demand for use on a wider range of machines.

With the introduction of the new sizes, Michelin’s product offering now covers all types of articulated dumptrucks. They say the new tyres have already demonstrated their appeal to quarry operators looking for more performance and versatility, whether working in sand pits, aggregate quarries or surface mining operations.

Key benefits of Michelin’s new XADN+ tyres include:

  • Improved safety: enhanced resistance to sidewall cuts and scrapes thanks to the addition of a protective belt and a more durable tread, while optimized layers on the crown and in the casing help maximize ADT up-time and on-site productivity.
  • Increased profitability: tyre life is extended by up to 15% thanks to a new tread compound and more durable casing.
  • Enhanced environmental performance: in line with Michelin’s philosophy of actively supporting more efficient mobility, the company has renewed its line-up to offer more performance while reducing its environmental footprint. The new XADN+, for example, uses 18kg fewer raw materials than the previous-generation Michelin XADN (for size 29.5 R25 tyres, this represents a weight reduction of 108kg per machine). In addition, all Michelin earthmover tyres are manufactured in plants certified to ISO 14001 standards. This commitment has enabled the Group’s production sites to reduce their environmental footprint by 22% since 2005. Moreover, the XADN+ is both repairable and retreadable.

Technically, these achievements have been attained through the use of C² technology, which uses a latest-generation casing to reduce heat build-up when the tyre is in use, as well as a 0.5-bar increase in operating pressures, which, at 5 bar, permits an authorized load of 9,250kg per axle in size 23.5 R25, and 11,500kg per axle for size 26.5 R25.

In addition to these improvements, the new Michelin XADN+ range offers all the advantages of the Michelin XADN, including:

  • Superior floatation and excellent traction on loose soil thanks to a deeply grooved tread featuring offset shoulder blocks and blocks with multiple sipes.
  • Excellent lateral grip on loose soil and superior self-cleaning capacity throughout the tyre’s life.

To complement the E3 XADN+ tyre range, Michelin also produce their E4 X-Super Terrain in the three sizes mentioned above.
